Create a device of your own design that will keep an egg from breaking when dropped from the roof of the Deer Hill School and the top of a firetruck ladder
DEVICE REQUIREMENTS:
1. Your device must be under 50 cm (approximately 19.5 inches) in width, height and length. If it has wings or a parachute, the longest length will be measured when it is fully expanded.
2. Your device must be designed and engineered by YOU - you may use parts of other objects (ie: soccer ball/ stuffed animal) but not the entire thing. It’s okay to use YouTube for ideas, but your design should be original!
3. Your device must be created only with acceptable materials. These include (but are not limited to) straws, craft sticks, tape (any type), paper (any type), aluminum foil, plastic wrap, plastic bags (any type), cotton, string (any type), cardboard, plastic/rubber, sponges, feathers and Styrofoam. Get creative!! If you aren’t sure if a material is acceptable, ask your teacher. It’s better to know before you build than to have your device disqualified!!
Prohibited materials include: latex (i.e. balloons), liquids, food, packaging that previously contained peanut or tree nut allergens, and prefabricated packing materials (i.e.: packing peanuts, bubble wrap, Amazon air bags.
4. The apparatus must be able to open in order to place the egg inside. Grade A Large eggs will be used. Your egg will also be placed in a sandwich baggie in order to contain any “lost” material. Please don’t bring your own egg--you will be given one at school.
5. Make sure you NAME your device and write it’s name (and yours!) boldly so it can be seen.
6. On the day of the drop, school staff will drop each apparatus from the roof of our school. You will not be allowed to give instructions on how to drop your device. Because of this, it’s recommended that the apparatus be symmetrical at all angles to make sure lands the same from all sides.
7. After the drop, judges will inspect your device. All parts of the device must remain inside the container during and after the drop. A drop that results in “lost” materials or an egg that is cracked, fractured or chipped will be considered a break. Make sure you test it at home to ensure success!
8. Successful devices from round one will automatically move on to be dropped from the top of a firetruck. If your device was not successful, you may make revisions and participate in round two. The same rules apply to all revisions!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Can we work with a partner?
Yes! You may work with another student in fifth grade, but both of you need to submit copies of the photos and write your own paragraph.
What work needs to be done outside of school?
All of the engineering, construction, drawing and writing should be done outside of school. It is up to you to plan your time wisely! If obtaining specific supplies is a challenge, please contact your teacher as soon as possible for assistance.
Can our parents help?
Parents can help you gather the supplies you may need. However they should not help you design or build the device. This should be done by you! Parents should supervise any practice drops you make at home. Any modifications needed should be done by the students.
What if we have illegal materials or did not complete the necessary paperwork?
You will be notified two days before competition that your device or paperwork was not in compliance. In order to still qualify, you will have an additional 48 hours until competition to make the necessary changes.
When is the actual egg drop?
The drop from the roof is on June 9 and the drop from the fire truck is on June 15. We have rain dates scheduled too, just in case!
Can someone from home come and watch the drop?
Absolutely! We are super excited to welcome community members back to watch this year!
Who are the judges?
Wait and see!! We are working hard to find guest judges for the day of drop to check to see if the eggs survived. We'll ask for parent volunteers and ask members of the school community to join us as well.
