The Assignment
Our country was born out of the desire for freedom. For over 275 years our service men and women have defended our ideals, both at home and on foreign shores. But these dedicated members of our armed services do more than just defend. They seek out injustice around the world and carry the burden of those oppressed on their shoulders.
Freedom comes at a cost. A cost that we owe an enormous debt of gratitude towards. For everyday that we ride our bicycles and listen to music or read a book or simply walk down the street without a hassle; it is in large part due to the sacrifice of these brave individuals.
Once a year, we have a day dedicated to honoring and appreciating those who fight for our basic freedom. At the Deer Hill School, we take this day very seriously. The fifth grade team asks that you spend some time reflecting on the freedoms that you were lucky enough to be born into. We ask that you think of the men and women who sacrificed our country, for our rights, for freedom. And this year, we ask that you communicate those thoughts by composing an expository essay.
Please take some time this week to think about which of the following essay topics you would like to select to show your appreciation for our veterans. Background information and discussion of the meaning of Veterans' Day will be done in school, and the essay must be completed and brought to school on Friday, November 1st. Pieces will be selected from each class to be evaluated for inclusion in our Veterans' Day Ceremony.
Once again, we owe a tremendous debt to the men and women who have left their homes, left their families, and at times, paid the ultimate price so that we don't have to live our lives in fear. We expect that whichever project you choose, it reflects your deepest gratitude with your utmost effort.
Sincerely,
The Fifth Grade Team
